Summer Returns

Mother Nature blessed us with a beautiful three days of summer like weather. We are expecting a fourth day of warm weather tomorrow, too. How could we be so lucky? Well, after the dismal week we experienced last week, economy and weather wise, we deserved a break and the sun and warm temps did the trick for me.

On Friday, I returned home from work to find my friend Marty doing some of the many projects I need done around my home. He is starting on the garage and I am so happy that I now have electrical outlets and switches that are safe and in working order. He installed a new shiny brass outside light to match the front door trim. He also installed a new fluorescent light in the garage ceiling near the door to the back yard and the door to the house. It sure is a lot brighter than the wimpy single bulb I had before. It will be much easier to see the spiders now. He replaced the screen in the garage attic vent and removed three wasp/hornet nests. Now I know how those hornet and wasps were getting in the house in the winter. He will be returning to take care of some other issues including patching some openings where little four legged creatures have been coming in for the winter.

One of my new outlets. My new light.
The new front light. It comes on when it detects motion outside. I feel safer now.
The repaired vent. No more wasp and hornet nests.

On Friday evening, Lisa, Becky, Angela and I went to see the latest Richard Gere/Diane Lane movie, Nights in Rodanthe. It won't be an Oscar winner but with Richard Gere in it who cares. It is billed as a tear jerker for middle-aged women and it pretty much turned out to be true. What a hunk!!!

I recently purchased some more cans of the Key Lime spray paint and so with the nice weather on Saturday I decided to turn a few other items lime green.
This was a copper colored lawn ornament, now it is lime green. It is sure to stand out in the winter.
An old rusted and flaking weather vane in the Disappointment Garden is now lime green. Way cool!!! I can't wait to see how cool it looks against the white snow. Well, I really can wait, I don't want to encourage the snow just yet.
I have a second Japanese Maple tree that has turned a beautiful orange in the last few days.
I now have two beautiful orange leaved trees in my yard. My very large Sugar Maple is dropping leaves that have turned orange, gold and yellow but most of the leaves on the tree are still green.
I spent most of the day on Saturday and Sunday doing yard work. I have about half of the Disappointment Garden all cleaned up but there is much more weeding and cutting to do next weekend. All the lawn furniture and delicate lawn ornaments are cleaned and stored for winter. The grass has been given its winter fertilizer. The first bunch of leaves have been vacuumed and mulched. There will be many more leaves to rake and vacuum in the coming weeks and my hydrangea still need to be winter protected and my trees and shrubs need to be fertilized. It seems like a gardener's work is never done but winter gives us a break. Just in case winter comes early, I cleaned the interior of my car and cleaned my winter coats. I don't plan on needing those coats any time soon. I am still proudly wearing my Birkenstocks without socks.

I had hoped to get more work done on my Quilt a Song quilt this weekend, but the weather was too nice to stay inside. I will work on it this week and post pictures, I promise. We are hanging the new exhibit on November 1st so I have a deadline fast approaching.

SAVE THE DATE: Sunday, November 2, 2008 2pm - 4 pm, the Opening Reception for the latest Quilt Exhibit at the Michigan Women's Historical Center curated by Linda and me, Quilts True Art IV. This will be our fourth exhibit at the MWHC Belen Gallery. Our first three quilt exhibits have been the most well attended exhibits at the MWHC. I spent the last four days at a quilt retreat at the Thunder Bay Golf Resort --- and the fall colors were spectacular, joining the beautiful weather! The facilities were great, the food, as well. I highly recommend it to any quilters! We had a fabulous gourmet dinner, after a horse drawn wagon ride to view elk --- and quilting, besides! I'll stop babbling!

How late is the gallery open on Nov. 2? I'm working that day until 4pm, but I will come by after work if they're open til 4:30or 5pm. I would love to see our quilts on display.

I second Carol's comments about the colors up north. I drove back from Traverse City on Monday through the most beautiful fall colors. I don't remember the last time that colors were this gorgeous. We ooh'ed and aah'ed every time we turned a corner and saw a new cluster of trees.
