This weekend I planned to do lots of outdoor work in the gardens and the garage. I even made a list and stuck to it. I broke down all the cardboard boxes in the garage and stuffed my car trunk with them as well as several bags of box board. I ventured to the Granger recycling facility not too far from my home. I did learn that it would help to be six feet tall in order to actually be able to put the items in the dumpsters. What were they thinking????? Why don't they have ladders? I made a mental note to bring my step ladder on the next trip to recycle. I also wish they would take green glass and Styrofoam.
It was getting really hot outside so I decided to work on cleaning the garage next. I swept the floor and cleaned and reorganized all my shelves. Some duplicate tools will go to Terri and Rodney's up north home and other tools and home maintenance items will go the Habitat Lansing ReStore. I have been leaving some no longer needed items by the curb and they get picked up by people who can use the item. Best recycling practice I can think of. I am still left with an over abundance of empty large plastic containers for cat litter. They work great as a container to hold weeds and garden tools but you only need a few.
With the garage looking much better, I started with the garden clean up. I managed to fill one large paper lawn bag but it was too hot to work outside, ninety degrees I think. After taking a little rest, I decided to use my telescoping tree trimmer and cut a fairly large limb off of the sugar maple in my back yard. The limb was encroaching on two Japanese maples and now they will have more room to grow taller. It was not too difficult to use. I might try it on the dying branches of the Russian Olive later this fall.
It is nice to get things accomplished around the house. That way you can enjoy your entertainment so much better. On Saturday evening Sophie and I went to the Peppermint Creek Theater Company presentation at the Renegade Theatre Festival in Old Town. The three day festival featured all the local theater groups at various venues in Old Town. The name of the show we saw was "David Sedaris Makes Me Laugh". It was a presentation by six actors who read 8 stories by David Sedaris. If you don't know who David Sedaris is, check out some of his books in the library. I became acquainted with him by listening to his Santaland Diaries and other essays on NPR. I have since read several of his books. He is absolutely hilarious. One of my friends said he is so funny it makes you *** your pants. How true. The show was excellent however, there were no "accidents".
The evening was especially nice because we got a good thunder and lightning rain storm that we had been needing for several weeks. It even drizzled for quite some time after the storm passed. It also brought in a cool wave that was a relief from the hot temperatures.
